Creating Family Identity

Creating and nurturing a strong Family Identity is incredibly important given all the external influences present in the world today.  Growing Kids God’s Way describes how “peer pressure is only as strong as family identity is weak”.  What a powerful reminder for anyone trying to raise children – especially teenagers!  Joey and Carla Link provide several practical examples of how to develop a strong Family Identity in their Moms Notes “Building a Healthy Family Identity”.  In this post, we will share some specific examples of how we work to create the Pearce Family Identity.

Creating Family Identity Through Singing Hymns Together

In a strange way, our family journey through the COVID-19 pandemic started in the summer of 2018 while on a family vacation in the Colorado mountains.  We made a small detour to have a quick lunch in a sleepy little town of less than 600 people.  Next to the restaurant was a second-hand bookstore with a series of worn titles.  One book stood out among the rest – a 1975 Baptist Hymnal for only one US dollar.

Once we returned from vacation the hymnal found a spot as a coffee table decoration.  That all changed when we started doing church at home through the lockdown while living in Singapore.  Our family began worshiping together through many of the classic hymns to recreate the experience of congregational worship.  Each person excitedly picked their favorite song for us to sing together.  This family tradition builds a strong bond and the smiles and laughter that result are irresistible.  The hymns also enable deeper understanding about the truths of God and help shape the Pearce Family Identity through worship together.

If you find yourself humming hymns you sang as a child, we hope you feel inspired to lead your family in worship.  If that is the case, you don’t need to worry about trying to find a second-hand hymnal in the mountains of Colorado.  We found four additional copies on Amazon and you can too!

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

that all of you agree with one another in what you say

and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united

in mind and thought.”

1 Corinthians 1:10
